A focus of the ALC during the 2010-2011 year has been to
develop learning communities amongst the 80+ Peer Tutor Teams. In
addition to maintaining our accreditation standards through the College Reading
and Learning Association (CRLA) through tutor training and evaluations, we have
created specialized trainings for 4 discipline teams led by our 4 Tutor
Managers. This is a role that has evolved into a substantial student
leadership model in conjunction with our newly formed learning communities.
The value of this role was celebrated by the recent recognition of one of
our graduating managers, Justin Mogilski ‘11, who won a GOLD A for his deep
involvement on campus, especially the Peer Tutoring Program.
Each Tutor Manager establishes
specific and dated goals for their teams which led to the creation of dozens of
electronic teaching resources for tutor and tutee development. For
example, tutors are exploring Bloom’s Learning theory to push tutees beyond
reliance upon memorization skills for independent learning.
In addition, an ALC staff goal each year is to increase the
visibility of these academic leaders on campus. We have established three
important ways to highlight tutor talent: 1) re-designing the ALC website
to showcase the faces of the tutors and student testimonials, 2) our 1st
annual tutor appreciation week occurred last fall, and 3) the launching
of a tutoring newsletter this spring which will always highlight various
community members. Our hope is that these become traditions on
campus.
On behalf of the ALC, we hope that you will find this news
section of our website as exciting as we do!
Sincerely,
Erin Evans
Director, Academic Learning Center.
