Experiential Learning at Albright
“Experiential learning leads us to question the assumptions and conventions underlying many of our practices. It turns us away from credit hours and calendar time toward competence, working knowledge, and information pertinent to jobs, family relationships, community responsibilities and broad social concerns.”
-- Arthur Chickering, noted researcher and author on student affairs
Albright’s goal during your four years of study is to develop you not only into a scholar, but also into a “doer.” Albright wants to continue an ancient tradition of taking classroom theory and challenging it with the realities of the society in which we live. Interactions with artists, scholars, the environment, foreign cultures, the disadvantaged, industry, employers and others are intended to illuminate problems in society today and to encourage students to act to solve them.
Various offices promote this type of experiential learning on campus, including the Experiential Learning and Career Development Center and the Volunteer Center. These offices help to connect you to internship opportunities, study abroad experiences, community immersion through service learning, student research, and potentially limitless and unexpected chances to interact with the people and places that surround you.

Furthermore, you will be required to attend 16 Experience Events before the completion of your sophomore year (or roughly four per semester). Experience Events highlight a topic in the arts, humanities, social sciences or physical sciences, and can range from theatre performances to forum discussions on peace in the Middle East to presentations by physicists. During the spring 2011 semester, more than 50 unique Experience Events were held, so the question is not, “How do I attend 16?” but, “Which ones?” To see a complete calendar of Experience Events, visit our Experience Calendar.
