2008 Fall Sports Schedules Available on the Web

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

ac athletics logoREADING, PA – With less than two months before the start of the 2008-2009 athletic seasons, the Albright College Athletics department has released the schedules for all of its 2008 fall sports.  This year will see the Red and White once again compete against some of the top teams in Division III.

The Albright Football team will look to continue their recent success following a strong 2007 season.  Last year the Red and White closed out their first season under the leadership of Head Coach John Marzka.  Coach Marzka led his team to a 7-4 record, 5-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference, a second place finish in the conference, and an appearance in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl.  The Lions will open their 2008 season on Saturday, September 6th against Salisbury University (MD) at 6 p.m. at Shirk Stadium.

That game will be only the third meeting between the two programs, as both squads will enter that contest ranked nationally on the USA Today Preseason National Poll which was released last month.  Currently ranked 11th on that poll, the Seagulls are looking to have another strong season after making their sixth NCAA tournament appearance in ’07.  The Lions who are ranked 24th on that same poll will bring into this season the number one player to look for in 2008, quarterback Tanner Kelly (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield).

Also kicking off their 2008 season at Shirk Stadium will be the Men’s Soccer team who will play host to Stevens University formerly Villa Julie College on Saturday, August 30th.  Game time for that match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m.  The Men’s Soccer program which finished out last season with an overall record of 8-9-2, 2-3 in the MAC will have another tough season ahead of them, as they face some of the top Division III soccer opponents.

On the Women’s side of the soccer ball, the Lady Lions Women’s Soccer team will open up their season on Friday, August 29th against DeSales University.  Kick off for that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Shirk Stadium.  Coming off an 8-10 record from a year ago, the Red and White are primed once again to make another run at the conference tournament.

The field hockey program will start the ’08 season on the road taking on York College (PA) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 29th.  They will then return home on Wednesday, September 3rd for their 2008 home opener against Keystone College at 7 p.m. under the lights of Shirk Stadium.  In 2007 the Red and White accumulated a record of 7 wins and 11 losses, and will look to build from that this season.

Albright Volleyball will also start of 2008 on the road, traveling to Delaware Valley College for a tri-match.  From there the Red and White will face-off against some tough opponents in the University of Scranton, Rowan University, and Susquehanna University, before making their first appearance in the Bollman Center in the 2008 Albright College Invitational on Saturday, September 13th.  Under the guidance of first year Head Coach Jennifer Constantino the Volleyball program is set to begin a new chapter in an already established program.

The Women’s Tennis team will start off their conference schedule on Saturday, September 13th visiting the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College.  This season should be another year of growth and development for the Lady Lion netters.

On September 15th, the Men’s Golf team will tee off their fall schedule taking on Lebanon Valley and Elizabethtown College at Berkshire Country Club.  With a second place finish in the conference tournament last season, the Red and White golf team will once again be swinging for the top spot in the conference this season.

The Men's and Women's Cross-Country teams will hit the ground running on Saturday, August 30th when they travel to Delaware Valley College.  That meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.  Both teams will spend most of the season on the road, until Saturday, October 18th when they host the Home Coming Meet which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
