What kinds of overhead projectors do you loan?

We own several different models, but most of our overhead projectors are 3M.

For how long can I borrow an overhead projector?

The borrowing period for an overhead projector is four (4) hours. This time period should be sufficient to use the projector in a class or lecture. If you need it for longer than four hours, make sure to mention it when you make your reservation or pick up the equipment.

Can I project an image from a book or a piece of paper using an overhead projector?

No. To project an image from a non-translucent source, you need a document camera, a type of projector that is not portable and must be connected to a computer. There are a few classrooms on campus that are equipped with document cameras. If you need one for a class, you should contact the Registrar, who may be able to change your room assignment on a temporary or permanent basis.

Can I make my own transparencies?

Yes. Transparency paper is available in the library or the campus bookstore, or at office supply stores like Staples and Office Depot. You can write or draw your own information on a transparency, or you can make a photocopy onto transparency paper.

I pressed the power button on the overhead projector, but nothing happened. What do I do?

First, make sure the projector is plugged into a working power outlet.

Many overhead projectors have space for two bulbs, and the second is a backup in case the first burns out. If the projector is equipped with two bulbs, there should be a sliding lever that will allow you to switch between bulbs:

If one or both bulbs is burned out, make sure to call Media Services at 610-921-7207 and let us know that we need to replace the bulb(s).

The power buttons on overhead projectors, particularly those made out of plastic, are notoriously finicky. When you press the button, you should hear a tiny clicking sound as it catches inside the projector. If the projector doesn't turn on, try pressing the button more slowly; you should be able to hear and feel the button clicking into place.

If you are still having trouble turning on the projector, if you do not hear the fan powering up inside, or if the projector feels cold to the touch after running for a minute or two, please call Media Services at 610-921-7207 and ask us to take a look at it.

My image is on the wall/ceiling/floor! How do I adjust it?

An overhead projector works by transmitting light through the glass stage of the projector (which is why you cannot project a page from a book using an overhead projector) and passing through a lens in the projector's head. Your image can appear someplace that it's not supposed to - like the wall or ceiling - if the lens is focused improperly.

On some models, the head looks like this. There are two glass lenses, one facing down and one facing in the direction that you're projecting. Make sure the head is oriented in the right direction:

On other models, the head looks like this. There is a glass lens facing down, and a mirror attached to the head at an angle to "bounce" the image in the right direction. Make sure the lens is oriented in the right direction and the mirror has not become bent or detached. Tilting the mirror changes where the image is projected:
