OUR MISSION:

The Public Safety Department is committed to providing an educational environment, which ensures that the safety of students, faculty, staff, and guests is protected within the available resources and through the adherence of rules and regulations promulgated by the College. Within the means available, the Department will protect the physical assets of the College and foster an attitude of cooperation with the community at large.

To maintain this safe environment, the Public Safety Department employs a complement of both full and part-time officers, as well as a contingency of Student Security Officers. With this staff, the Department is able to provide 24 hour per day service, every day of the year.

The Public Safety Office is located at 1311 College Avenue. The emergency telephone number for immediate access to the office is 311. There are emergency telephones strategically located throughout the campus that can be accessed in emergencies by pressing the red key button. These telephones also provide local calling capabilities.

ID CardPhoto ID Cards
Every member of the Albright College community is issued a photo identification card which must be carried at all times. For students, this card allows access to their individual residence hall, the library, the dining hall, and the campus bookstore. It is also a means to ensure that only those with authorization are frequenting the campus. The cost for a lost or inappropriately damaged identification card is $30.00.

Access to the residence halls can only be accomplished through a photo identification/access card. This security feature is only as good as those who are willing to utilize it. Propping of doors or allowing access to the building to non-registered or unauthorized persons, jeopardizes the safety and integrity of the building and its occupants. Violators who prop doors are subject to a $300.00 fine and/or a disciplinary hearing.

All students should remember that the residence halls are not immune to theft or forced entry. It is, therefore, strongly recommended that students refrain from keeping large amounts of cash or other irreplaceable valuables in their rooms. The College does not assume responsibility for personal property lost or stolen. Room doors should be locked at all times, unless occupied. Combinations, keys, and access cards should not be shared with others. Students will be charged $25.00 if combinations or locks must be changed because of a breach of confidentiality. Replacement cost for lost or broken keys is $25.00.

it's an eyeKeep An Eye Out

Everyone in the Albright community should be aware of their surroundings. Although we enjoy a safe campus environment, we should never become complacent. When a suspicious person or circumstance is evident, immediate contact should be made to the Public Safety Office. Do not attempt to intervene in any suspicious circumstances.

fire!Fire Safety and Prevention

All of the residence halls are equipped with heat and smoke detectors. When activated, an alarm is sent to the Public Safety Office, as well as a monitoring company. The fire department is immediately notified and responds regardless of the outcome of the alarm. On occasion, alarms will be activated by things other than smoke. Hair sprays and colognes applied too close to the alarm head may set off the alarm. Obviously, it is important that we have installed alarms that are sensitive and will employ in an emergency. An outside company checks the alarm heads periodically.

Unannounced fire drills are conducted each semester throughout all the buildings on campus. It is imperative that when an alarm is sounded, everyone evacuates the building immediately. Occupants will be directed to a specific evacuation area. Those who fail to exit any building when an alarm has sounded will be cited to appear before Community Standards. No one should ever assume that an audible alarm is just a drill and not an emergency situation.

All emergencies, criminal acts, and various disciplinary issues are reported to and investigated by the Public Safety Department. On occasion, depending upon the severity of the situation, the Reading Police Department or the Muhlenberg Township Police Department are notified and beome involved in campus related criminal activity. Both departments have an excellent response time to campus.
